Moncler jackets,andMoncler Sweatersa Tapert Howe, an interior designer who lives on the Lower East Side, said in a phone interview that she had been wearing a Maison Martin Margiela ski-lodge-inspired beige sweater and a newly purchased furry vest from the Lanvin for H & M collection instead of a coat. “The fit has gotten so much better, especially when you have these high-end designers doing it,” Ms. Tapert Howe, who is 30, said of the sporty pieces. “It’s sort of cute. It’s a city take on this old-school preppy ski look. It’s pulled together enough that if I have to go to a meeting, it’s fine. And I’ll wear a camisole underneath so if I have to go to dinner,Moncler Sweaters’ll take it off.”

Though the consumer has been instructed to layer, layer, layer for several seasons now, it wasn’t until this year that the look really began to oust the traditional wool overcoat. An examination of the past few seasons reveals the migrating winter coat sleeve: three-quarter-length to half to the inexplicable short sleeve. Now, late in 2010, the garment seems to have all but disappeared, replaced by various combinations of down puffer jackets, heavy sweaters and fur trimmings. On a recent Friday, when the temperature dropped to 35 degrees, Rosa Constantino, 25, was walking down West 14th Street in an oversize vintage Fair Isle cardigan in place of a proper coat. “A coat is hard to carry around,” she said.
